In a year ofcriticallyacclaimedgames,Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisisis certifiably a mobile title that came out. Billed as “another possibility for a remake,” Square Enix hyped up the game’s PSXFinal Fantasynostalgia while kind of hiding the fact that it was, in fact,just a gacha game. For presumably that reason, manyFinal Fantasyfans vocalized their wish to seeEver Crisison PC and consoles, and it looks like they’ll get some of what they asked for.
Square Enix announced via social media that a Steam version ofFinal Fantasy 7: Ever Crisisis in development. While details are sparse, we do have confirmation that data will transfer between mobile and PC versions of the game. Otherwise, we don’t have much to go off of here. Square Enixhosted a live streamthat showed a shot of Cloud and Aerith on a PC screen (pictured above), which is something, I suppose.

Honestly, seeing this news this morning filled me with such deep confusion. There are free-to-play mobile games where a PC/console port makes sense, likeAnother Eden. However,as someone reviewed this thing, I can sayFinal Fantasy 7: Ever Crisisdoes not fit that environment. It is a title that, atbest, works as something you kind of pay attention to while you kill time. Outside of incredibly specific niches, like someone who livestreams the game, I don’t know who this PC port is for.
I do understand that, leading up to release, many fans wanted this one absolved of mobile exclusivity. But that was also when many believed this was more of a straightforward remake and notjust a gacha game. It’s certainly not a title that benefits from busting out a controller, I’ll say that much.
Admittedly,Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisisis an easy game to clown on. Even outside of gacha or pay-to-win arguments, competing games likeHonkai: Star Railare just wholesale better. However, it isn’t enough of a disaster-piece to be interesting for that reason, either. Making a weird, convoluted,auto-play MMORPG out ofYs VI: The Ark of Napishtim? Nowthere’sa mess.Ever Crisisjust feels like something that will live and die with less fanfare than its fallen brethren likeMobius Final Fantasy.
Anyway, I digress. For those who enjoyEver Crisisand still want that PC port, I hope this version of the game sates you. No release window has been revealed at this time.
