Epic Games executive producer Rod Fergusson has boldly claimed thatGears of Warboasts the best cast of characters in videogames, pitting Marcus Fenix and pals against a list that often includesHalf-Lifeand at least one roleplaying game.
“I think people don’t realise the calibre of acting that can be in videogames, and how much they push it,” claimed Fergusson. “Our cast I think is probably the best cast in videogames, but obviously I’m biased.

He also bigged up the famous “Maria” scene fromGears 2, touting it as an intense, emotional experience: “Being involved in every voiceover situation for all three games, and having to prepare for that scene, and having to turn off the lights in the studio so he could get into it, and actually having him cry in the studio over it.”
Many will scoff at the idea of puttingGears of Warup there with some of the best narratives in gaming, but I don’t thinkGears‘ story gets enough credit. Sure, it’s not the most beautiful and sentimental of plots, but it does feature a cast of strikingly affable characters and an energetic, well paced story of the popcorn-chewing variety.
