Feature hidden away in control options

In an homage to the classic adventure games which came before it,Broken Agefeatures a hidden visual mode that gives a sense of what the title might have looked like back in the golden age of the genre. The above video shows how to access this mode, which is accomplished by reducing the resolution to 640×480 and then entering the “Key Remapping” menu to assign a key to a new option labeled only by the lead characters’ faces. Once back in the game, you may press the newly assigned key to activate the effect.

It’s ugly and I’d likely never volunteer to play through the whole game looking like this, but how it actually looks is not why I appreciate it. Double Fine said they wanted to make an adventure game in the style of the games I grew up with and this mode is a sure-fire way to assess how successful they’ve been. If it’s still completely playable, regardless of its visual fidelity, that’s a major victory.
