Releasing next year

Nintendo is finally entering the mobile space withDeNA. Its first app to come out of the collaboration,Miitomo, is a Mii-centric free-to-play title about communicating with others.

Miitomowas originally scheduled to launch this year, but Nintendo felt it needed to push back the release to March 2016. CEO Tatsumi Kimishima told investors at a briefing today in Tokyo that the company is caught up promoting other impending games, and with more lead time after the holiday season, it can properly explain and market the mobile app.

It’s being pitched as a “friendly conversation starter.” You are the main character, so to speak, and you’ll be asked questions whichMiitomowill then relay to your friends’ Mii. The idea is to help people discover commonalities and build “unexpected relationships.”

Looking further out, Nintendo and DeNA plan to release four more mobile games by March 2017. That’s presumably when we’ll start to see its iconic characters on smartphones and tablets.
