RememberStar Command? It’s that upcoming mobile game that I called “Game Dev StorymeetsStar Trek”last weekand may have gotten a little bit excited about. In an interview withThree Quarter D/Pad, two guys from War Balloon Games talked a bit more about what inspiredStar Command.

As it turns out,Game Dev Story was an inspiration in terms how it was able to provide simplicity, while at the same time letting the player intuitively manage a lot of aspects of a traditionally complex genre of games. At the same time, that game showed that people are perfectly ok with spending more than just a few minutes with a mobile game, and that there is a market for more “traditional” gamers who like complex games as well. But the true inspiration behindStar Commandcan be found in games likeX-Com,Civilization, andThe Sims.

War Balloon’s Jordan Coombs also ranksTIE Fighterin his top 5 games, and doesn’t understand why we haven’t seen any moreStar Warsspace combat games. You and me both. Just do it already, LucasArts, and show Volition that they can safely makeFreespace 3while you’re at it.

The entire interview covers some more things, ranging from what made the team get into development to the state of mobile markeplaces and how the new mobile gaming era represents the early days of PC, 20 years ago. It’s an interesting read, and I suggest you go check it out!
